Dear valuable Beijing page visitors,
The Beijing Page Team expresses our sincere thanks for your love and support for the Beijing page to help build a better online Beijing Directory. Today we have the honor to present you a touching story of Amanda Power about her life before and after breast cancer. We run her personal story in the hope of helping raise awareness for breast cancer and support for other girls like Amanda Power who's lives have been affected by breast cancer. In April 2009 Amanda Power and her husband Richard will undertake China Challenge 2009 with a team of 32 people, 30 of whom are women, and they will be hiking along the Great Wall of China around Beijing for 6 days (amazing as almost all of these woman are breast cancer survivors - as is Amanda Power - and they range in age from 36 - 61 years old). Thank you for your time to read the story and offer your kind support for breast cancer patients within South Africa as well as medical research worldwide. From Editorial Department, Beijing Page
China Challenge 2009
Newsletter
18 January 2009
To all our wonderful family and friends,
Richard and I wanted to keep you all in the picture with regards to the progress we are making with our China Challenge, taking place in April 2009. (I apologise for the slight lull in news over the festive season!)
There are so many of you whom have helped us along the way and we will be ever grateful to you all. With your love and support we are going to be able to spread awareness regarding breast cancer and offer support to many girls like me. If I am able to help just one girl in her journey through breast cancer, then my job is done!
Our very exciting news is that we have secured sponsorship for our flights to Beijing! Cathay Pacific has agreed to provide both Richard and I with complimentary flights - an amazing gesture. This means that we will be able to make an even bigger contribution to our charity, St Luke's Hospice. We are so very grateful to Jacqui Verrinder of Cathay Pacific for her kindness and hard work on this front.
The list of sponsors to date are as follows (listed randomly, actually by date received):
1. Karrimor - have provided Richard & me with backpacks for our hike along the Great Wall.
2. Gareth Griffiths Photography, Noordhoek - Gareth has very kindly offered to help us with publicity for our hike and is also arranging an editorial in our local paper, The People's Post. Look out for it!
3. Dermalogica - I have secured sponsorship for our team of 32 in the form of trial size packs of skin care products.
4. IQ Suncare - I have secured sponsorship of 10 x tubes of SPF40 which our team will share to ensure we don't get to exposed to the elements along the Great Wall.
5. Look Africa Sunblock - I have secured sponsorship of sun-block (you can never have too much!) and lip-ice for all of the members of our team.
6. David & Bina Power (Richard's brother & his wife) - many of their wedding guests supported our cause and have helped raise funding for the China Challenge. We would like to thank David & Bina for this very generous gesture (& for sharing their little girl Aliya with us). We also owe an enormous thank you to all of David & Bina's guests who so kindly gave to our cause, although many of them did not even know us. They have all become great friends.
Thank you too, to so many of you for your cash donations which continue to come in and have been so gratefully received. Richard & I are in the process of purchasing our medical aid kits, hiking boots, hiking poles and foul weather gear, all of which is proving to be very pricey! You have no idea how much your donations are helping us.
Next on my list is securing sponsorship for Richard & my accommodation in Beijing (prior to & after the hike). I will keep you all posted on my developments - if anyone has any suggestions as to whom to contact I would gratefully accept them!
We have just applied for our Chinese visa's so are holding thumbs that nothing will be held up on that front!
I am currently in the process of securing guests & prizes for a golf day which I am going to be holding along with St Luke's Hospice in order to raise much needed funding for this amazing charity. The golf day will be taking place on Friday, 6th March 2009 at Mowbray Golf Course - I will be sending out invitations to you all so look out for the email!
Lastly - I would once again like to thank all of you who attended our Auction & Raffle Evening held at Café Roux, Noordhoek, in December 2008. The evening was a huge success and we will be eternally grateful to all of our wonderful guests. Of course, without our sponsors the evening wouldn't have been possible so an even bigger thank you goes to all of them!
Also please remember:
Breast Cancer Ribbon Names:
Please enter the name of a family member or friend who has been diagnosed with breast cancer within the past year, remembering that our target age group is 20 - 40 years. We will pin a breast cancer ribbon bearing the name of one young girl to our backpack at every kilometer (the hike comprises 85km's). It's our way of supporting her and carrying her along with us (physically as well as spiritually).
We have been amazed by people's generosity and by what incredible family and friends Richard and I have.
With love and a big thank you to you all,
Richard & Amanda
(80 Trafalgar Place, 17th Avenue, Fish Hoek, Cape Town, South Africa. Tel: 021 782 5229)
Note: Now, we have secured the sponsorship for Richard & my accommodation in Beijing (prior to & after the hike). The Double Tree by Hilton in Beijing (www.beijing.doubletreebyhilton.com) who have offered to sponsor our stay from the 1 - 5 April as well as the Grand Mercure Xidan (www.mercure.com) who have offered to sponsor our accommodation on a bed and breakfast basis from the 10 - 13 April 2009.
China Challenge 2009
Newsletter
23 February 2009
To all our wonderful family & friends,
So much has happened since my last newsletter to you all & we can hardly believe that the China Challenge has generated such an amazing response both within South Africa as well as worldwide. We really feel that in some way Richard & I are raising a message of hope to cancer sufferers worldwide. There are so many of you whom have helped us along the way & we will be ever grateful to you all!
Our latest exciting news is that it seems we have managed to secure sponsorship of our hotel accommodation in Beijing! This was made possible with the help of Jacqui Verrinder of Cathay Pacific Airlines. Jacqui has worked so hard in order to help our cause, it seems no hill is too great for her & we are so grateful.
The reason the accommodation is required (both prior to & after our hike) is that Richard & I are going to be visiting Beijing (& Hong Kong) for a few extra days – this as we have managed to secure some much needed local publicity, in the form of radio interviews & television coverage.
We will also use the time to meet up with local breast cancer support groups. We feel that it is just as important to generate awareness for our cause within China as this, after all, is where our hike will be taking place.
The only stipulation by the hotels is that we offer them some South African advertising (by no means an easy task!). This is my current project & where all my present efforts are concentrated - we don’t want to loose this incredible offer of sponsorship. If any of you have any contacts in the advertising world please let me know!
